Thought I would start this thread to see what current AHL players we would like to see playing for LEM next year. Our weaknesses on the back end are quite evident. I think we need to add 2 quality AHL defenseman to our line-up.

We are deep in the net and thats always a good thing. As far as up front goes, we have alot of talent up there. I hope we keep Eric Healey even though he is a free agent this off-season.

I think if the right moves are made this offseason we could really have a solid LEM team for next year.

2008-09 The year the success in the stands spills over to the LEM team on the ice!

GO MONSTERS!!

Is it October yet? Can't wait for next year.. Cool

I'm not exactly sure when they start signing players for next season but I do know that The Monsters Parent club The Colorado Avalanche is out of the playoff, so the top brass has alot of time on their hands now.

Usually all players from Avs/Monsters report to NHL training camp in September. After the NHL Pre-season teams narrow down their rosters and either release players, send them to their AHL Affiliate (Monsters) or send them back to their junior teams or college teams.

As far as contracts go I believe each AHL team is only allowed to have so many veteran players in the line-up. There are also one-way contracts and two-way contracts. I think the one-way contract means they are a Monster for the duration of the contract and will never get called up. The two-way contract is just the opposite I believe.

The parent club Colorado Avalanche (NHL) handles all the one ice hockey decisions for The Avalanche and The Lake Erie Monsters. Gilbert and company take care of the rest i.e. ticket sales, entertainment and promotions.

The AHL rules state that the team must play 11 players who have been in less-than 260 Pro games. (Meaning, NHL+AHL+IHL+ECHL regular season games combined. Not including goalkeepers.)

And 1 player that has been in less than 320 Pro games. (Sometimes this player is counted as a Vet)

So the team can then play 5 players of any other experience level. For a total of 17 players. If the team dresses 18 players, the additional player must be of the 260 games or less variety.

There is nothing in the official rules, that I could find, about Goalkeepers and experience restrictions. They aren't counted as veterans in the lineup.

Also, players on loan from the NHL as part of a 2 week conditioning period are not counted either.

The LEM can start signing whenever they wish now. Some other teams are locking up a few free agents but I will assume that the meetings with the Avs brass will help determine the potential holes in the lineup, possible free agents that will be offered 2-ways,etc. and then Oliver can start signing for next season down on the farm. We should be able to attract more top-end AHL free agents this coming year as it is once more a good time to be in Cleveland and playing hockey.

You got that right! Its great to see, the fans of Cleveland deserve this especially after what they suffered through from the modern day barons regime. With some tweaking The Monsters could make some noise next year. I think our division will be the toughest in the AHL next year.

the first thing the av's need to do is find a new coach and since san jose fired ron wilson MAYBE the av's should try and get him to replace quennville.

if scotty bowman joined the av's front office that wont sit well with red wings faithful, including me.
well whoever the avs get as their new coach it will be a new system for the players to learn and the monsters would have to follow suit, so next season will be something to see.
according to the av's message board here are some of the possibles: patrick roy, pat burns, tony granato (current assistant coach), pat quinn, bob hartley, bryan trottier, chris stewart (no relation), tod mclellan (better not happen), ron wilson, paul maurice, john tortorella and kevin dineen.
who do you guys think will be the next coach of the av's?

we will have to wait at least 3 more years before that to happen (switching affiliations) I THINK the av's have a 5 year contract or something like that. yeah i dont like the av's too much myself but...
look at it this way, under quennville they really amounted to not much but under a new coach and new system we (the monsters) might be able to do better than we did this season.

Hey, The Hansons, what do you have against Todd McLellan? Is it because you want him to remain in Detroit as an assistant or do you just not like the guy? I'm just curious as to why you made that comment as I found McLellan one of the better coaches to have passed through Cleveland in recent years.

As to signing people for the Monsters...until the Avs sign their own players we won't have a clue what they are going to do at this level. With as many UFAs as they have on the 2007/2008 roster, it will be a very hectic and busy summer for the GMS of both levels. By the time the price tag is paid for upstairs there may not be much gelt left for down here. At least the average crowd size should lure a broader talent base. The guys no longer have to listen for the crickets to have some inspiration.

Which is a roundabout way to say I expect the Monsters to be improved. Colorado stated more than once that they were not happy with the win/loss record in Cleveland and I will hold them to that. That means they have to put the personnel in place that will shift the balance to the winning side.

Mostly it will be a keep an eye on the transaction wires for the next few months. As UFAs sign across the league we'll have a much better idea of who could land down here.

One last thing: I believe one-way contracts refer to not being sent down a level, not to being restricted from being called up a level. Hence, a one-way AHL would mean that player could not be sent to the ECHL or UHL, etc, but would be able to go to the NHL with no problem. Show me a player that signs a contract that says he cannot move up a league and I'll show you a player who hired his agent from a phone number on the back of a matchbook with fuzzy printing.

A one-way contract means you get paid your base salary regardless of where you are sent. So if you are signed for a million and you get put in the AHL, you still get paid that money.

A two-way contract means you get paid X in the NHL, and less in the AHL, etc.

In both cases, waivers are still in effect. So a player moving between leagues, regardless of contract, would have to go through waivers.

The NHL can put a player in the AHL for a two-week conditioning stint and that player does not have to go through waivers. They are still on the parent team's active roster. We had this one time last year with Jose Theodore in goal at the start of the season.

Lake Erie has 4 years left on its 5 year affiliation agreement with the Avs.

The Avs have until July 1st to sign all of the unrestricted and restricted free agents right? So it looks like June is going to be rather busy for the team... especially if a head coach isn't found...

the new head coach of the avalanche is none other than TONY GRANATO the current assistant coach, instead of going out and getting a coach they promoted granato, this will be the second time that granato has coached the av's. lets see what he can do.

Wow, ask, and I shall receive! Yay for Granato! Now lets see if it works some more...a great birthday gift for me today would be to, of course, sign some prospects, so for my birthday, lets sign Boychuk, Bacashihua, DaSilva, Healey, Weiman, and/or I guess Jillson... lol... props to KatieRoo for the last suggestion! But lets sign some prospects now!!!
