Daryl Morey tells Jason Friedman of the Houston Press that Tracy McGrady is the best passing wing in the NBA, according to research: "... there's no question he's the best passing wing, not only from our eyes but there's evidence as well. If you look at passes that lead to high percentage shots, Tracy leads the league in that. That's the key to a skill he has that, I think, is still undervalued and less known from people who don't watch the Rockets every day. So does LeBron rank second in that particular area? Yeah, I know he's high up there. I don't have the ranking in my mind. But I know we looked at it last year and part of the way through this year. I haven't taken a look at it since the season ended, but [Tracy] is always the top guy. So what you really focus on then are passes that lead to good scoring opportunities? Yeah, guys who get players the ball in high percentage areas, whereas a lot of assists come from a pass to an open guy who has a 20-footer. That's not a great shot. Tracy's passes generally lead to open three looks, or shots near the basket."

i know we've talked about this before, but to say tmac is better passer than lebron is an insult in my mind. yeah lebron would avg. about 5 or 6 more assists a game if he had some consistency from his teammates on the offensive side, but it just boggles my mind when they say tmac is a better passer.

no he wouldn't. the reason lebron gets so many assists compared to other players is because he dishes the ball to the inside while most stars dish it to 3 point shooters. no way lebron would average 14 assists.

What are you talking about?!? First of all, LeBron gets plenty of assists to 3-point shooters. Wally, Gibson, Delonte/whoever is playing the guard... that is how they get most of their open looks. And we have no one who really finishes inside too much, most of Z's 15 footers are because he picks and pops with LeBron. And if LeBron did get lots of assists inside, this supports the article's claim of what makes a good passer. It says T-Mac's passes "generally lead to open three looks, or shots near the basket." So obviously they value passes that set up 3's or get easy layups.

T-Mac's passing stats near the basket are probably inflated because of Yao. LeBron has no one like Yao to throw the ball up to near the basket.

And to say T-Mac is a better passer than LeBron is ridiculous. LeBron is the best wing passer of all time, perhaps. He's the best 6-8 or 6-9 passer since Magic.
